Multnomah Falls has a legend told of terrible sickness that threatened the Multinomah people. An old medicine man revealed that the sickness would pass if a maiden threw herself from a high cliff on the Big River to the rocks below. When the Chief's daughter saw the sickness on her lovers's face, she went to the cliff and plunged to her death. Now, when the breeze blows through the water, a silvery stream separates from the upper falls. The misty stream fashions a form of the maiden, a token of the Great Spirit's acceptance of her sacrifice.
I love the gorge and have spend many days hiking the around in the cliffs, watching the wind surfers and sailed up and down it a few times. Its a magical place that I can never grow tired of. How fun it was to share it again with Dad, Ili and the girls!
